“Devised Theater”
Exilio: My Life as Bolaño / Exile: Mi Vida Como Bolaño, es un espectáculo de “Devised Theater” (teatro artefacto) en proceso creativo con el apoyo de Cultura UdG y a través de una estrecha colaboración con artistas de Canadá, Estados Unidos y México: dos artistas del NACL Theater (New York), Tannis Kowalchuk y Brett Keyser; la escenógrafa e iluminadora –que además fue el primer puente entre los creadores canadienses y mexicanos para este proyecto- Flavia Hevia; la actriz y directora Lydia Margules; la gestora y productora Zazil Servín de Museo Deseo Escena (México); y el actor y director Ker Wells of HopScotch Collective (Toronto, Canadá). El proyecto descansa sobre tres temas entretejidos: exilio, identidad y nacionalidad. Así, los materiales de búsqueda y experimentación surgirán de la vida y obra de Roberto Bolaño, los cantos Nor-americanos “sacred harp”, música mexicana popular y los eventos histórico-políticos de 1968 –esto último como un reflejo del clima político actual.
El Proceso
Los colaboradores se reunieron por primera vez en la ciudad de México en febrero de 2010 para la primera exploración de trabajo y el acercamiento de las diferentes trayectorias creativas. Este primer encuentro tuvo lugar en las instalaciones de la Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana. Se empezó a desarrollar una metodología de trabajo y el material en busca de una dramaturgia escénica y la propia estructura del espectáculo. Esta primera fase del trabajo fue posible gracias al apoyo del Canada Council for the Arts Theatre International Program y la Independence Foundation.
Actualmente, se lleva a cabo la segunda parte del proyecto en la que se concretará un primer esbozo a presentarse en el Teatro Experimental el 16 y 17 de febrero a las 20:30 horas, a manera de “work in progress” (trabajo en proceso) y con entrada libre.
El Proyecto
El trabajo y vida de Bolaño son recursos vastos y ricos para un proyecto que cohesiona el trabajo de seis artistas teatrales multifacéticos de tres países para considerar el exilio como un estado, una perspectiva, una decisión, un curso y una bendición. Y el teatro como identidad. Consideraremos también la tensión entre arte y acción y el arte como acción – algo que produce un efecto, en el nivel individual, social y político. Se trata de un grupo tri-nacional con historias personales y políticas únicas, compartiendo profundos lazos históricos y al mismo tiempo con diversas aproximaciones y relaciones hacia el gobierno, las distintas clases y las razas.

The works of Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño have inspired many writers. Now it’s his life that is inspiring performers from Mexico, Canada and the United States to cross both geographical and theatrical boundaries with the ambitious project/play Mi Vida como Bolaño/My Life as Bolaño.
An experimental homage to the colorful and complex life of the author of “The Savage Detectives” and “2066,” will be presented next week in Guadalajara at the Teatro Experimental. Its Canadian/U.S. producers describe it as “a work-in-progress” performance.
Born to a teacher and truck driver (also a semi-professional boxer), Bolaño lived for most of his life in exile, working as a dishwasher, bellhop and garbage collector in Spain, France, El Salvador and Mexico. It was not until his later years that he finally received recognition for his work. In respect to this diversity and to Bolaño’s Chilean roots, the production will be bilingual (in English and Spanish). While this has been challenging for the actors with only rudimentary Spanish, Kerry Wells, Canadian director and actor of Mi Vida como Bolaño/My Life as Bolaño, believes it was important to the theme.
“This is an instance of Canadians and Americans coming south and performing in both English and Spanish,” he says. “There’s an interesting symmetry there. Many Mexicans end up going north and living in a context that is completely foreign to them. They have to learn a different language just as we are.”
The process has also broadened the producers’ and actors’ perceptions of Mexico.
“So much of what we hear in Canada and the States is about violence, narcos, a kind of anarchy, that Mexico is falling apart,” says Wells, “My impression though has been of the overwhelming warmth of the people. The people are generous, cordial. It’s like being in a small town in Canada. We haven’t had a single negative experience.”
Indeed, the collective has been generously supported by the University of Guadalajara’s Department of Culture, as well as by their their own sponsors in the United States and Canada.
This support has made the team even more eager to impress their Tapatío audience. Their unique approach to theater mixes hyperrealism and naturalized scenes, and Kells is confident Mi Vida como Bolaño/My Life as Bolaño will be a rewarding experience.
“My opinion is that theater in Canada and the States has become become trapped in an attempt to compete with television. So much more is possible. I want to imagine a reality created theatrically with all the contrast, color and diversity of human life.”
Mi Vida como Bolaño/My Life as Bolaño will be presented on Wednesday, February 16 and Thursday, February 17 at the Teatro Experimental (Calzada Independencia, near Agua Azul Park) at 8:30 p.m. Entry is free but given the recent difficulties procuring state funding in the United States and Canada, the group is inviting guests and supporters to make a tax-deductible donation at their website www.nacl.org. The team, which includes actors Tannis Kowalchuk and Brett Keyser from the North American Cultural Lab in New York, Canadian stage designer Flavia Heiva, Mexican actor and lighting designer Lydia Margules and producer Zazil Servín, will regroup at the end of the year and stage the completed play in New York.
The play Mi Vida como Bolaño/My Life as Bolaño will be presented at the Teatro Experimental on February 16 and 17. Canadian and U.S. actors will perform in English and Spanish.
